Play is important.

The importance of play to young children’s healthy and holistic development and learning has been documented by researchers for years. Through play time, students are encouraged to explore their surroundings, navigate relationships and social situations, and learn what it means to be part of a collective group. Positive peer play interactions are associated with skills that support children’s engagement in learning activities and experiences in the classroom, such as self-regulation, cognitive flexibility, language, perspective taking, problem solving, and creativity.

We’ve been inspired by the way that our students have shown curiosity and creativity during recess over the past three years. With no playground, and our only recess area being our parking lot surrounded by wood-chips, our students have worked together to make up new games and have joy-filled playtime, despite the lack of equipment and structure.

Playgrounds are Expensive.

But to live out our mission of providing an equitable education to all students, we believe it’s absolutely necessary to provide a world-class play space for our students at our new school. We believe that all kids, regardless of what zip-code they live in, deserve state of the art equipment to play on. But playgrounds are expensive, with most playgrounds cost over $100,000!

We need your help!

This summer, we need your help. The doors of our new building are set to open this fall to hundreds of Detroit students, and we’d love to have a new playground ready to play on as soon as possible. Please consider donating, sharing, and being a part of providing a beautiful, fun, and safe play structure for our students and neighborhood!
